Welcome to Middle Earth!
Aéroport D'Auckland → Auckland
Welcome to Nouvelle-Zélande! Upon arrival, a shuttle takes you to the Auckland City Hotel, in the city center. Nicknamed the City of Sails, Auckland is the country's largest city, notably marked by the presence of Polynesian cultures.
Depending on your arrival time, you may be able to discover Wētā Workshop Unleashed (optional). This immersive experience immerses you in the world of costumes, sets and special effects created by the studios that worked on The Lord of the Rings.
Tomorrow, you will begin to follow in the footsteps of Peter Jackson and the New Zealand landscapes that brought Middle-earth to life.

From the Watchtower to the Shire
This morning, you pick up your rental car in central Auckland (transfer to the depot not included), then drive towards Rotorua via Matamata. After the Bombay Hills, a detour via Port Waikato takes you in the footsteps of Amon Sûl, the Windpipe of the Lord of the Rings.
You then discover Hobbiton during a guided tour included of 2 hours 30 minutes. Among the hobbit holes of the Shire, you pass by Bag End, Bilbo's house, and under the Party Tree, before heading to the Green Dragon Inn to taste a local drink. To extend the visit, the Behind the Scenes Tour is offered as an extra: it lasts 4 hours 30 minutes and includes lunch.
You continue towards Rotorua, known for its Maori culture and geothermal activity. At the end of the day, you can stroll along the lakeside, discover the Government Gardens, the Maori village of Ōhinemutu or the redwood forest. The pools of the Polynesian Spa are another relaxation option.

Heading to Mordor
Rotorua → Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest
The day begins at Wai-O-Tapu (entry included). You discover the bubbling pools, the geyser and the colours of this geothermal site before heading back on the road.
You pass through Taupō and its lake, then reach the Tongariro National Park, the setting for several scenes from Lord of the Rings. Its volcanic landscapes evoke the lands of Mordor; Mount Ngauruhoe notably lent its silhouette to the Mount Doom.

Immersion in the Heart of Mordor
This day is dedicated to the Tongariro National Park, whose volcanic landscapes served as the backdrop for Mordor in The Lord of the Rings.
If you choose the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, plan for a long hike across the slopes of Mount Ngauruhoe, which embodies the Mountain of Destiny, the Red Crater, the Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake, before descending back towards the forest. The summits are sacred to local Māori communities, who ask visitors not to climb them.
For a more accessible walk, you can explore the surroundings of Iwikau Village, associated with the battle scenes of Mordor, or discover Tawhai Falls, the setting for a scene with Gollum.

Behind the Scenes of The Lord of the Rings
Tongariro National Park → Wellington
You head south on the North Island. The volcanic landscapes of Tongariro gradually give way to lush hills, then to Kapiti Coast, before your arrival in Wellington. The capital and its surroundings hosted numerous Lord of the Rings filming locations, both in studio and on location.
You visit the Wētā Workshop during a 90-minute discovery tour included, dedicated to the creation of sets, costumes and accessories. At the Wētā Cave, a museum shop, you can also see replicas, weapons, figurines and other collectible items, as well as pose with the three trolls from the Hobbit. Depending on your schedule, this visit may take place the following day.

Wellington: In the Footsteps of the Fellowship of the Ring
Start with the wooded hill of Mount Victoria, whose pine forest served as the setting for the opening scenes of The Fellowship of the Ring, notably the appearance of a Nazgûl. Continue to Harcourt Park, used to represent the gardens of Isengard, then to Kaitoke Regional Park, the setting for Rivendell.
Optionally, you can head towards Cape Palliser and discover the Pūtangirua Pinnacles, where the scenes of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli's search for the Army of the Dead were filmed. The rock formations can be viewed from the viewpoint of the marked trail.
If you have time remaining, visit the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Crossing to the South Island and road to Motueka
Check in at the Wellington ferry terminal at least one hour before departure. During the crossing to Picton, you cruise along Wellington Bay, cross the Cook Strait and navigate through the Marlborough Sounds.
At Picton, you continue by road via Havelock, known for its green mussels, then stop at Pelorus Bridge, the filming location for the barrel escape scene in The Hobbit. You then travel through a forestry region before reaching Nelson, home to the jewellery shop Jens Hansen, creator of the One Ring.
The day ends in Motueka, in an orchard region. Stay for two nights at Lemon Tree Lodge, near Abel Tasman park.

Free day in Abel Tasman National Park
From Motueka, enjoy a day at your own pace in the Abel Tasman National Park. Its golden sand beaches and landscapes inspired some settings from The Lord of the Rings, notably Dimrill Dale and Rivendell. The park can be explored on foot, by kayak or by boat.
The Abel Tasman Coast Track runs along coves, orange beaches and rivers lined with native vegetation. Highlights to discover include Onetahuti Beach, the suspension bridges near Bark Bay, as well as Anchorage Bay and Cleopatra's natural pools.
As an option, a helicopter flight allows you to see Mount Olympus and Mount Owen, associated with scenes from The Lord of the Rings.

From Motueka to Punakaiki, heading for the wild coast
From Motueka, take the road towards the Wild West Coast, between the New Zealand Alps and the Tasman Sea. You follow the Buller river and its gorges to Westport. A detour via Cape Foulwind allows you to observe a colony of seals in their natural habitat.
Continue towards Punakaiki to discover the Pancake Rocks, rock formations sculpted by marine erosion that resemble stacks of pancakes. At Tauranga Bay, you can go beyond the main viewing platform and walk a few minutes to enjoy a panoramic view of the coast.

Heading Towards Franz Josef Glaciers
Head south towards Franz Josef. Along the way, stop in Hokitika, a small town renowned for its jade workshops. You can visit a pounamu workshop and do some shopping before continuing towards the glaciers of Franz Josef and Fox, located near the sea.
The surrounding mountains belong to the Southern Alps, which appear in The Return of the King during the lighting of the beacon fires. The scene filmed along the White Mountains (Ered Nimrais) was shot at Mount Gunn, near Franz Josef.

From glaciers to lakes: scenic drive to Queenstown
From Franz Josef, make a first stop at Fox Glacier, then head to Lake Matheson, known for its reflection of Mount Cook. An easy loop of around 1 hour 30 minutes allows you to walk around it.
The road continues towards the Haast Pass, between the west coast and the Central Otago landscapes. Viewpoints and short walks punctuate the route, particularly around the Blue Pools. After a break at Wanaka, on the shores of the lake of the same name, head towards Queenstown via the Cardrona Valley, then reach the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
If time permits, take a detour to Deer Park Heights, filming location for several films, including The Two Towers, Wolverine, Pete's Dragon and The Rescue.

4x4 Excursion to Iconic Lord of the Rings Locations
Departing from Queenstown, embark on a full-day guided 4×4 adventure with a saga enthusiast. From the Ford of Bruinen, where Arwen escapes the Nazgûls, to the plains of Isengard, the scene of Saruman's schemes, you'll discover the landscapes that served as backdrops for Peter Jackson's trilogy. You can even don a cape and recreate sword fights.
The locations visited include:
the Ford of Bruinen and the Iris Fields;
the Pillars of the Kings (Argonath) and Ithilien;
Isengard and Beorn's house;
Lothlórien and Amon Hen;
the Skippers Canyon viewpoint, weather permitting;
Arrowtown, Gibbston Valley, Glenorchy and Paradise;
Mount Aspiring National Park, UNESCO-listed;
the filming sites of Arcadia Station, with private access.

On the way to Te Anau, at the gates of Fiordland
From Queenstown, follow the Lake Wakatipu, then cross the green plains of Southland to reach Te Anau. The town is located on the shores of the largest lake on the South Island, at the entrance to the Fiordland National Park.
In Te Anau, you can discover the glowworm caves by boat, enjoy water activities or fish. The region is also the starting point for hikes on the Kepler Track, Routeburn Track and Milford Track.
For The Lord of the Rings fans, Te Anau is home to part of the Fangorn Forest. The Waiau River, visible at several points along the road between Te Anau and Manapouri, was used to represent the Anduin. At the entrance to the town, you can also take a break to observe some local bird species.

Milford Sound Cruise: Between Fjords and Legends
From Te AnauTe Anau, take the Milford Road through the Fiordland National Park. Take time to stop at the viewpoints that line the road to Milford Sound, where eagles soar in The Hobbit.
At Milford Sound, board a two-hour catamaran cruise to the Tasman Sea. The crew presents you with the wildlife, geology and history of the fjord. The boat passes under the Stirling Falls, where glacier meltwater provides an icy shower. Tea and coffee are complimentary on board; a café-bar also offers beverages.

From the lands of Fiordland to the battlefields of Gondor
From Te Anau, take the road to Twizel passing through the vineyards of Cromwell, then through Omarama and the Lindis Pass.
Born in 1968 during the construction of hydroelectric dams, Twizel is located in a region that served as the backdrop for several scenes from The Lord of the Rings, notably the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
Accommodation for two nights at the Distinction Mackenzie Country Hotel. To break up this journey, an intermediate stop at Wanaka is possible, with just one night in Twizel.

Exploration of Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, Heart of Gondor
From Twizel, drive along Lake Pukaki, whose turquoise waters hosted the sets of Esgaroth (Lake-town) in The Hobbit. On clear days, you can see Aoraki/Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest peak, before reaching the village of Mt Cook. The region's landscapes were also used for aerial shots of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Access to the heart of the Pelennor Fields requires private permission. However, a track marked by the DOC offers views of the plains and mountains visible in the films. 3 km from the village is also the location used to represent Minas Tirith.
From the village, you can choose an easy walk to the Tasman Glacier (30 minutes return) or a hike through Hooker Valley (3 hours return). The Visitor Centre and the centre dedicated to Sir Edmund Hillary allow you to continue discovering the region.
At the end of the day, return to Twizel along Lake Pukaki, with a possible stop at Lake Pukaki Viewpoint.
Night at Distinction Mackenzie Country Hotel. Alternatively, you can spend the night at Mount Cook Village instead of returning to Twizel.

From Lake Tekapo to Christchurch, Between Lakes and Gardens
From Twizel, reach Lake Tekapo and its glacier-fed lake with turquoise waters, with the Southern Alps as backdrop. Enjoy a stroll along the water or spend time at the village's thermal centre. You can also hike or drive up to Mt John to admire Lakes Tekapo and Alexandrina and observe the stars.
Continue towards Geraldine, then Christchurch (Ōtautahi). Nicknamed Garden City, the city combines green spaces, Victorian architecture and modern constructions. You can discover the botanical garden, a small collection of the Canterbury Museum exhibited at the COCA museum during its renovation, the art gallery, the Tūranga library, the historic tram and the Avon River. The city also features numerous cafés and restaurants as well as a thermal centre with sea views.

See you soon in New Zealand!
Depending on your flight time, take a last moment in Christchurch to stroll around, do some shopping or revisit your favourite spots.
Then head to Christchurch Airport, return your rental vehicle and take your return flight. Lōthiel!
