Visit of Sacred Waters and Discovery of the Volcanic Region

Rotorua → Napier

3h220 km

This morning, discover the sacred waters of Wai-o-Tapu, its boiling pools, colors and geyser, which erupts at 10:15 a.m. Then stop at the Huka Falls, on the Waikato River, the longest in the country. Its turquoise water flows at a rate of 200 m³ per second, enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool in ten seconds.

Continue to Lake Taupo, the largest in Nouvelle-Zélande, with an area comparable to that of Lake Léman. It occupies the crater of a volcano whose last eruption occurred less than 2,000 years ago. According to reports, this explosion, forty times more powerful than Mount Saint Helens in 1980, was reportedly observed as far as China.

5h30330 km

Head toward the West Coast by crossing the Nelson Lakes National Park, then follow the river and the Buller Gorges to Westport.

In the afternoon, observe the seal colony at Cape Foulwind, at Tauranga Bay. The cape owes its name to a storm experienced by Captain Cook. After nearly disappearing in the 19th century due to hunting for their skins, the seals living at the foot of the cliffs are now seeing their numbers increase.

Continue to Punakaiki to discover the Pancake Rocks. Eroded by the Tasman Sea, these rock formations resemble stacked pancakes. When conditions are right, water rushes into their crevices and shoots up between the rocks.
